Fisheating Creek Wildlife Sanctuary
Fisheating Creek flows from Highlands Hammock State Park south and enters Florida's Lake Okeechobee along its westerly rim. Over 30 miles of the creek meander through an extensive cypress strand and is entirely in its natural state. Lykes Brothers Cattle Company owns all but two miles of this pristine wilderness while the state has a scenic easement over their entire floodplain. Of the two miles remaining, one belongs to Fisheating Creek Wildlife Sanctuary. This group of 12 share owners has 300 acres lying south of the bridge at Venus. Individuals within the group own another 100 acres that the group can use as well. Camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, nature study and wildlife photography are all available. Owners reserve a group cabin on a first-come, first-served basis. The property has been enjoyed in this way for over 40 years. Shares in the past five years have sold from $25,000 to $65,000, based on the timing of the recession. From time to time, these shares continue to be offered for sale.
