The Hiker's Grand Slam
Best hikes in the U.S. Best hikes in the WorldThe hiking community now has its own Grand Slam: the four best hikes in the "Lower 48." Add the best hike in Alaska (when the route has been located) for the Super Grand Slam. The four best hikes elsewhere in the world make up the World Grand Slam. Here is the criteria for "Slam" designation: four to seven days in length, circuits preferred, scenery that is nonpareil, water available each day, a trailhead accessible by car, Wilderness Areas preferred. All eight Slam maps of trails identified here have been produced. Jim Kern made the selections. In time, HGS subscribers will vote each fall to confirm the Grand Slam listings for the coming year. These listings, plus the runners-up, will form a trails inventory of the most spectacular trails.worldwide.
